Digital Literacy & AI Literacy Assessments

The Centre for Information Technology in Education (CITE), Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong, invites schools to participate in two structured, research-backed assessments designed to support evidence-based teaching and learning in the digital era.

As Hong Kong’s schools navigate the digital education landscape set out in the Blueprint for Digital Education Development in Primary and Secondary Schools, understanding students’ actual digital and AI competencies has never been more important.

These assessments offer schools a structured, independent view of where students stand — and a clearer basis for planning teaching, professional development, and school-based digital education strategies.

Digital Literacy Assessment (DLA)

Built on the internationally recognised European Digital Competence Framework (DigComp), the DLA evaluates students across five core areas:

• Information and Data Literacy

• Communication and Collaboration

• Digital Content Creation

• Safety

• Problem Solving

Target group: Primary School Students (P5–P6) and Secondary School Students (S1–S3)
Format: Online platform
Date: (Pre-test) Starts in October 2026• (Post-test) Starts in April 2027
Duration: 30–40 minutes

AI Literacy Assessment (AILA)

Developed in alignment with the OECD and European Commission’s AI Literacy Framework for Primary and Secondary Education, the AILA assesses students across four competence areas:

• Engaging with AI

• Creating with AI

• Managing AI

• Designing AI

Target group: Primary School Students (P5–P6) and Secondary School Students (S1–S3)
Format: Online platform
Date: (Pre-test) Starts in October 2026 • (Post-test) Starts in April 2027
Duration: 30–40 minutes

Participation Availability

A maximum of 10 primary schools and 10 secondary schools will be recruited on a first-come, first-served basis.

Schools:

✅  School-level reports on student performance

✅  Access to a structured, research-backed assessment platform

✅  Actionable insights into students’ digital and AI literacy development

✅  Contribution to educational research that benefits the wider Hong Kong school community

Students:

✅  Engage with real-world scenarios and interactive tasks

✅  Understand their own digital and AI literacy strengths and areas for growth

✅  Contribute meaningfully to research on digital education development in Hong Kong

1. Express interest — Contact our research team to register your school’s participation

2. Receive login accounts — Participating school will receive a dedicated link to conduct the assessment. Created based on your confirmed list of participating students

3. Conduct the assessment — Students complete the assessment individually at a time that suits your school

4. Receive your school report — Gain insights to inform your school’s digital education planning

The study has received ethical approval. An informed consent statement is included at the beginning of each assessment. All data is used strictly for research and educational development purposes under agreed ethical and governance guidelines.
